Behind the scenes: QBD The Bookshop – Pacific Fair

You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy books, and that’s kind of the same thing

AMP Capital Shopping Centres Senior Project Retail Design Manager Tiffany Kemp, recently worked with Pacific Fair retailer QBD The Bookshop—a Queensland based book retailer owned and operated by a local family—on their new fitout.

Having been involved with this retailer previously, Tiffany knew something special was required for the store for its new fitout which formed part of the Pacific Fair redevelopment.

“Often we have to take a retailer on a journey of discovery and this was one of those occasions,” Tiffany said. “I knew that the owner of this small chain of book shops would want to build a replica of his existing store so I had to get him on side and excite him to the possibility of doing something new.”

Tiffany began researching the brand’s heritage and discovered it was older than she first thought. Tapping into this rich history Tiffany thought about the type of building this heritage retailer would be at home in and came up with the idea of an old building with exposed structural roof supports and raw architecture. She selected materials and imagery which had a sense of history and longevity like recycled brick, reclaimed timber and old metal. She also sketched up some ideas for the store layout and shopfront.

“I was a little anxious as to how this idea of mine would be received but to my delight the owner loved it. I helped him to select a retail designer and the concept came to life.”

For the business, it’s very satisfying when retailers invite AMP Capital to partner with them in developing their concept and business, placing their trust in our expertise and insight. This personalised approach takes more time and energy but it’s worthwhile when the outcome is of a standard like QBD The Bookshop.
